In the heart of St. Louis’s Central West End stands a building that has quietly transformed the landscape of global chess the Saint Louis Chess Club (SLCC) began in 2007 as a local initiative to promote chess in the community has evolved into a world-renowned institution, often hailed as the Chess Capital of America.
Founded by Rex and Jeanne Sinquefield
and the main motto to start this club was
To promote chess as a tool for education, discipline, and community development and to make the game accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or skill level.”
A Legacy Built on Vision
The Saint Louis Chess Club is more than just a playing venue; it’s a movement. With over 6,000 square feet of space, the club houses a state-of-the-art tournament hall, classrooms, a library, and casual play areas designed to make every visitor feel part of a greater chess community.
They purchased a property at 4657 Maryland Avenue in the Central West End neighborhood a peaceful, artistic area ideal for learning and community activity. This building covers about 6,000 square feet, featuring:
Ground Floor: main tournament hall and casual play area
First Floor: training rooms, classrooms, and analysis areas
Library Corner: collection of chess literature and archives
Broadcast Studio: for commentary and live streaming of tournaments
Over time, SLCC’s success attracted global attention.By 2014, the U.S. Congress officially declared St. Louis as the Chess Capital of the United States.The club later began plans to expand its campus to nearly 30,000 square feet.
The Saint Louis Chess Club operates as a nonprofit, primarily funded by:The Sinquefield family foundation ,Donations from chess supporters,Event sponsorships,Membership fees,Collaborations with educational institutions.
Where Champions Are Made
Slcc have become a synonymous with some of the most prestigious chess tournament namely as US chess championship ,US women championship and the Sinquelfield cup one of the crown jewels of the Grand Chess Tour.
Through these events this club has given the world some of the greatest chess players of all time namely as Hikaru nakamura,fabiano caruana, vishwanathan anand ,wesely so and so on.
For many of America’s top grandmasters, including Caruana and So, the club has been more than a venue it has been a home base, a nurturing ground for their growth into global icons.

The impact of slcc has affect alot of people not just American but people from all over the world now has been made to have interest in playing chess regardless of age whereas many small age childrens are becoming international master at the age of 15 and competing.
