By – Mohd Kamran Hasnain

Introduction

In the ever-crowded arena of Indian chess, where grandmasters are no longer rare, there walks a boy with soft eyes, quiet confidence, and the mind of a genius—Nihal Sarin. He doesn’t roar. He doesn’t boast. But when he sits across a board, even the world’s best tighten their grip. This is not just a prodigy. This is a revolution in silence.

Early life and background

Nihal was born on 13 July 2004 in Thrissur, Kerala, India. Sarin Abdulsalam, Nihal’s father, is a dermatologist while his mother, Shijin Ammanam Veetil Ummar, is a psychiatrist. He has a younger sister, Neha. His family spent their first few years in Kottayam.

Nihal began learning chess at the age of six. In order for his son to not feel bored during school vacations, his father introduced Nihal to a chess set, and his grandfather A. A. Ummar taught him the rules at Kottayam, where he was a student of Excelsior English School. Nihal’s first coach was Mathew Joseph Pottoore, the school’s chess coach who instructed him twice a week in the beginning and then gave Sarin special individual classes.

Rise to fame 🏆

Nihal Sarin’s ascent is stitched with brilliance, resilience, and breathtaking calm under fire. His breakout came at the 2019 World Cup, where he stunned Jorge Cori and outwitted Eltaj Safarli, leaving even Magnus Carlsen in awe. At just 14, he finished 11th at the World Blitz Championship, crushing 2700+ giants with a performance rating of 2777. In the 2021 Junior Speed Chess Championship, he dismantled Vincent Keymer and later Raunak Sadhwani with ruthless bullet dominance. His clutch victory over Mamedyarov at Tata Steel Rapid 2022 and an Armageddon triumph against Anish Giri in 2022 sealed his elite status. Known for his quiet focus, backward knight sacrifices, and explosive time control precision, Nihal doesn’t just win—he overwhelms. With a 56-game unbeaten bullet streak and titles across youth, classical, and blitz formats, his rise isn’t just a story of talent—it’s one of fearless execution on the world’s biggest stages.

Playing style and Personality

Nihal Sarin is known for his dynamic and aggressive playing style, particularly in shorter time formats like rapid and blitz. He excels in tactical calculation and often wins with tactical flourish, earning him the nickname “speed devil” and “master tactician”. However, he is also a strong positional player, demonstrating deep calculation and the ability to shift between positional and tactical play.

Impact and legacy

Nihal Sarin has redefined what it means to be a chess prodigy in the modern era. Beyond his flawless technique and calm demeanor, he symbolizes India’s global emergence in the chess world. His consistent triumphs across formats—from classical to bullet—have inspired a generation to believe that age is no barrier to excellence. Nihal’s humility off the board and ruthlessness on it have created a rare legacy: that of a silent warrior who speaks only through moves. With deep positional understanding, lightning speed, and unmatched composure, he’s not just a champion—he’s a cultural force transforming Indian chess into a youth-powered revolution. His legacy will echo in every young player who dreams with strategy and fights with intellect.
